... and I have a soft spot for tiny tundra plants
I investigate all sorts of things, but these are my favourite topics
Plant functional traits

Most recently, this is what I have been up to
1.10.2024
I was invited to give a presentation at the Arctic/Alpine Plant Trait Ecology seminar. I gave a talk about trait-environment relationships. The event was organised by Ragnhild Gya (University of Bergen, Norway) and Anne Bjorkman (University of Gothenburg, Sweden).
21.9.2024
Together with Pekka Niittynen (University of Jyväskylä), we gave a presentation on microclimates of Kilpisjärvi to the general public during the celebrations of the 60th birthday of the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station.
29.8.2024
I co-organised 26.-29.8.2024 the Microclimate Ecology and Biogeography conference 2024 in Helsinki, Finland, together with Juha Aalto (Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finland), Pekka Niittynen (University of Jyväskylä, Finland) and Miska Luoto (University of Helsinki, Finland). This MEB2024 conference was the second MEB conference following the first MEB2022 conference held in Antwerp, Belgium, and you can read more about it here.
8.8.2024
I am back from seven weeks of fieldwork in northern Finland. Together with Pekka Niittynen (University of Jyväskylä, Finland), we collected data on plant species, plant functional traits, and geodiversity in the Kilpisjärvi region, Oulanka national park and Pallas-Yllästunturi national park. We also carried out a vegetation resurvey together with Wakana Tateishi (University of Hamburg, Germany), and participated in a global biodiversity survey GetDiv. We also conducted fieldwork for an art collaboration with photographers Sinikka Niittynen and Heikki Willamo.
29.7.2024
I published as a co-author a research article on the effects of high-Arctic vegetation communities on active layer thaw. The research was led by Sil Schuuring (University Centre in Svalbard, Norway) and you can read more about it here.
3.7.2024
I am awarded the title of docent by the University of Oulu, Finland. The title is a peculiarity in the Finnish university system and refers to an independent researcher with good teaching skills.
25.6.2024
I am appointed as the assistant professor in biodiversity change at the University of Helsinki, Finland. This is a tenure track position, which is affiliated with the Finnish Museum of Natural History (LUOMUS) and the Organismal and Evolutionary Biology Research Programme at the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences.

I think peer review is very important, so I like to stay active
I have reviewed manuscripts for Austral Ecology, Biodiversity Data Journal, Carbon balance and Management, Ecography, Ecology and Evolution, Ecology Letters, Environmental Research Letters, Geoderma, Global Ecology and Biogeography, Journal of Applied Ecology, Journal of Ecology, Journal of Geophysical Research - Biogeosciences, Journal of Vegetation Science, Nature, New Phytologist, Oecologica, Plant Biology, Plos One, Science of the Total Environment, Scientific Reports, South African Journal of Botany, and Terra. Editors, please keep the invitations coming :-)
